Brisbane wants to poach Ben Hunt from the Dragons

Brisbane wants to poach Hunt from the Dragons... but Broncos Great isn't a fan

The Broncos will sign suspected Dragons captain Ben Hunt on a short-term contract for the remainder of the 2023 season after he formalizes his release from St. George Illawarra.

The Daily Telegraph reported that Hunt is set to be released by the Dragons as early as Monday with an immediate transfer to the Broncos for the remainder of the season.

Hunt is then slated to sign a lucrative two-year deal to end his career with the Titans beginning in 2024.

Barring a massive turnaround after meeting new coach Shane Flanagan, Hunt has likely played his last game for the Dragons.

The Broncos have yet to formally contact Hunt, but Brisbane will contact the Dragons on Sunday to discuss a transfer deal that would include a similar transfer fee as the Bulldogs took on Karl Oloapu in exchange for $500,000.

The NRL has warned clubs in Queensland, because of anti-tampering rules, that the Broncos should go straight to the Dragons before speaking to Hunt, who has a contract through the end of 2025.

The Broncos' salary cap is enough to sign Hunt for the remainder of the 2023 season in a deal valued at an estimated $200,000.

Hunt is expected to play as a hooker or five-eighths, with Adam Reynolds being the team's captain and halfback.

The signing of the Kangaroos and Maroons hooker will make the Broncos one of the favorites to win the Premier League in 2023, which would be their first since 2006.
